Thrifty shopping

At thrift stores there are shoes, and tchotchkes, and dishes... OMG there are dishes - "Shakespeare's Birthplace" and Royal Doulton, 1970's shopping store give-away and one-of-kind design-fading dinnerware, can-you-believe-someone-ate-off-that?, and more...

And then there are treasures such as these type-setter's trays from an old printhouse that closed in East Dallas. They couldn't even remember its name. Trays and trays of typeset. I don't know if they threw away the keys that were in these, but other trays "Jolly" and "42PT Spart" and "18PT Stymie" were full.

I wanted to save every one and set print and see what 42 point words looked like in "Spart." But instead, I took a photo. Which I found was a very good thing to do in a thrift shop. I felt like I had come home with it all, but none of it would ever be dusty.

Dallas Observer Music Awards 2007 (DOMA)

I'm not seeing this posted elsewhere (I could be wrong; I didn't search for it very hard), so I'm posting it here. And yes, I skipped some categories, sorry. I'm really happy about the inclusion of Johnny Lloyd Rollins, St. Vincent, and Smile Smile this year, and the whole Best New Act list is well worth listening to.

Fun fun fun for a Tuesday morning. Got an email from one (one?!) of my fav bands that they had been selected to "compete" in Quick's "Battle of the Bands." It's a March Madness-like lineup of all our favorite local bands. WE get to vote on who goes to the next round. The little disclaimer that "you only get to vote once and you can't change your vote"? Wrong!! Keep clicking and watch those percentages add up! I, personally, put Deathray Davies ahead of Headkrack. I consider it my community service done for the day.

No way to represent, Sistah

Ever since Sam left the Observer, I've been remiss in reading the weekly, well, at all. I'd so much rather hit Merritt and Andrea's blogs. Cut to the chase, ya know? So, I spent a little time on my blogreader today, catching up. And, apparently, forming opinions about the writers. Julie, Bible Girl, is my new crush (God, she'd hate that! hee hee) and Jonanna Widner is trying too hard. She's dissing on my homies, man. First she calls Sorta bombastic, disappointing, 70's leftovers (OK, that could be a little out of context), then she says Radiant* has "Coldplay Disease" and she writes it like it's a revelation. Um, Jonanna, we like that about Radiant*. Always have. And then there is this quote: "I'm beginning to think every band in Dallas should be a tribute band."

I'm just sayin', that's all.

update: OK, she redeemed herself somewhat in my estimation today. (odd... today? no, not possible, really, she had a deadline, she'd been working on that article awhile...) She has been around just a short time, I'm planning to stay caught up on my blogreading now. Paper's so messy. But, damn, I think I just got lumped in as an "offshoot".
