Oh, Oh, O's!

Can't wait, can't wait! 'til Thursday...

The O's came over to my new studio, before there was even any electricity, and wonderful videographer Alex Kanakis rolled ... um... pixels. No "tape" for us.

Before we got started Taylor (on the left, with mustache) asked me what questions I would ask in our interview, and I went through my usual, "What do you like about Lakewood, where do you hang out, did you grow up in Dallas, when are you releasing the CD, what are you working on now... you know, that sort of thing." He nodded, and Alex began recording. I think I asked them, "What are your favorite places to hang out in Lakewood?" but for twenty minutes after that, I couldn't get in another word, I was laughing so hard. The O's were on a roll. They are Dallas' version of the Smothers Brothers, and the funniest, best FreakFolk* players I know.

You can find the O's everywhere.

*not my terminology. I'd rather go with "PopFolk" if you're asking my opinion.

ArtCon4

Please come. I'm participating. Since the theme of ArtCon4 is "deconstructed" (referring to the cold and windy warehouse we'll be working in?), I'm doing something on the now-defunct podcast, www.dconstruction.org, which showcased local bands. If your band was on dcon, check out my piece. You might see yourself. Or something that sortof looks like your band. Maybe. I haven't made my piece yet. Come Saturday, and bid for a good cause.

"Art Conspiracy strives to put on guerrilla-style, affordable art fundraisers and use the proceeds from these events to reinvest in the local arts economy."

My ArtCon 2008 project "Dconstruction." Layered plexiglas and Sharpie marker, based on my photos of the artists. Thanks to Cindy Chaffin who bought it and is probably wondering how to hang it, because the screws were way too long. Cool that she has it, because she knows all the bands depicted.

from the top...
The bands featured on the dconstruction podcast were The Valentines, Sorta with Carter Albrecht, The Strange Boys, Pleasant Grove, Solly, Salim Nourallah, Old 97s, Happy Bullets, Baboon, Deathray Davies and podcast hosts Robert Jenkins and Lindsay Graham.

Speaking of the Old 97s, their Dallas show is at the House of Blues on 5/31.
But not with I Love Math. =(

(The photo is from a very rare John Dufilho solo set at Barley.)

The highlight of Marfa

From a PR email... clearly a must-see art show:

Former Dallas artist and current Marfa resident, Campbell Bosworth will show over 40 pieces from his current work in painting and sculpture on Saturday, May 3 6-8:30 p.m. at the Janette Kennedy Gallery in Southside at Lamar, 1409 S. Lamar. The reception and exhibition are free. The exhibition continues through May 31. To view the exhibition beyond reception hours, call 214-426-1575 or visit http://southsideliving.info/art_of_urban_living/gallery_history.htm.

BORDERLINE GREATNESS features paintings and sculpture depicting images and objects from Marfa and the Far, West Texas border region. Specifically, Bosworth has chosen to focus on the narco-trafficking aspect of the border. The show features oversized sculptures of carved wooden Glock pistols, a six-foot, silver leafed AK-47 and giant tequila bottles.

Living on the border, I've learned people bring their dreams in some form or another to the USA. Every week our local paper has stories of folks being busted with drugs. But behind those stories are real people or families working just to survive, says Bosworth.

Over 100 brick-sized, carved and painted wood 10,000 dollar bundles occupy a corner of the room. It is 1,000,000 million in cash for the lucky.

Bosworth quips, I woke up every morning and told my wife I was going to the studio to make money.

The highlight of the show may be the 10-foot-high, silver-leafed replica of the Marfa Water Tower. In keeping with the theme of the show, Bosworth has painstakingly engineered it to dispense fine tequila.

Bosworth moved to Marfa in 2001 and was represented by the Cidnee Patrick/Edith Baker Gallery in Dallas and is currently represented by the Koelsch Gallery in Houston. http://www.sawdustpoet.com

Tequila AND art? Oh, yeah. I'm soooo there.

It'll be a Lousy Sunday night - not.

I love Lousy Robot. They've recorded all their albums at Pleasantry Lane studios with Salim Nourallah and now they're coming back through Dallas from New Mexico. They're good friends with John Dufilho (he produced their CDs) so the show should be fun. They're straight-up pure pop goodness. Dark lyrics with fun tunes. Great guys. Tidbit of info: their bassist, Dandee Fleming was (until recently when Lousy Robot took up more time) also bassist for The Dirty Novels, who seem to play a lot of Lollipop Shoppe shows. Their Socyermom Records (guys- I want a T-Shirt!!) release, "Smile Like You Are Somewhere Else" follows their equally obliquely named "The Strange and True Story of Your Life."

They'll be in Austin, Ft. Worth, and Dallas on this tour. Catch them at

Friday, April 11th Troubadour Saloon - Austin TX 503 E 6th.
LOUSY ROBOT, THE ULTAVIOLET INDEX, PAUL BANKS, SEA LEGS

Saturday, April 12th - Fort Worth TX The Moon Bar 2911 W. Berry St.
W/ FELLOW AMERICANS AND QUO

Sunday, April 13th - Dallas, TX The Barley House 5612 Yale
W/ JOHN DUFILHO AND SPECIAL GUESTS

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Yup. it's big alright!

I heart Quick, and Hunter Hauk, and Cindy Chaffin and Lance Spune and CJ Davis and Paul Salfen and all the other panelists (though I have never met the others) because, laudy, this is gonna be a great night!

At the Palladium, Thursday April 24 and don't you miss a minute of it. Performing are more people dear to me:
King Bucks with Salim Nourallah
Sarah Jaffe
Doug Burr
and Johnny Llloyd Rollins
and
The Polyphonic Spree ('cause it don't get bigger than them in Dallas music)
plus others.

(psst- if you're wondering if it's a good idea to have repeating letters in your name to be known in Dallas, you might ask PPT. oh yeah, they're on the bill, too. Sorry Record Hop, you guys must be from Denton.)

UPDATE: leave a comment to have FREE tix MAILED to you. First 5 commenters get 2 tix each. Offer ends 4/18.

Ian Moore at the Rockyard in FW

I know, I know... I haven't posted in forever. Sorry. I've been sidetracked by fun assignments and lots and lots of editorial photography and loving it. However, this popped into my inbox, and we all know how much I love Ian Moore:

IAN MOORE BAND IN CONCERT
at THE ROCK YARD on MAY 25th

Critically acclaimed, guitarist and songwriter, Ian Moore, performs a rare full band show at the Rock Yard on Friday, May 25, 2007.

In the 90’s, Ian Moore gained national attention stemming from the roots rock scene of Austin, Texas. With 6 Top 20 Billboard singles to his credit, he has opened full North American tours for the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, ZZ Top and in 2005, Paul Weller. Now hailing from Seattle with six albums and a seventh on the way, Moore has shed the blues guitar mantle for more diverse stylings. Moore is a prolific multi –instrumentalist and songwriter whose influences of Brit pop, Psychedelia, Roots Rock, and Gospel along with his signature vocals and incisive, character driven lyrics meld to create his ever evolving eclectic style.

Billboard raves, "He doesn't fly with angels; he dances with devils."

Be among the first to hear songs from his new album,"To Be Loved" on Justice Records, slated for release August 14th. Backed by a stellar band including Kullen Fuchs on trumpet, keys and vibraphone, Rebecca Young on bass and Kyle Schneider on drums,
featured songs will include the Beatlesque stylings of "House up on the Hill", the sparkly pop rock and driven percussion of title track, "To Be Loved" and signature guitars on "Innocent Maneuvers."

Metroplex favourites and Dallas Observer's 2006 Best Overall Act winner Sorta, join us to round out the night. Don't miss this opportunity to see Ian Moore with his full band in concert for a riveting show that Pop Culture Press calls,
"...a layered, emotionally entrancing live set."

This will be a great show with Sorta opening. Their new CD, Strange and Sad But True is one of the best albums put out this year. If you're in Ft. Worth, you can't miss this show. If you're not, I have one word: Roadtrip!!

The Slack is back!!

The Slack, that stalled project that made me gush back in Aug 2005, is once again a living, breathing band, though its membership has changed. In the fine, long-standing tradition of East Dallas bands, The Slack has rearranged its musical chairs, and reincarnated itself.

They're playing TONIGHT at Sons. Go! It'll be fun, I promise.

and in addition to that, Chris is now playing in Johnny Lloyd Rollins' band, and they are part of the wonderful line-ups at the North by Southwest shows at ellumONSTAGE. Check this out...

The show is on Saturday. The lineup is as follows:
12:00 - Swim Swim
1:00 - Benjamin Del Shreve
2:00 - The Planning Fallacy
3:00 - Love & Reverie
4:00 - Kingfish
5:00 - Smile, Smile
6:00 - Johnny Lloyd Rollins
7:00 - Salim Nourallah
8:00 - Hendrick
9:00 - Polyphonic Spree

I had wanted this post to be long-winded and all gushy about The Slack, but that will have to wait. Leaving on Spring Break. Going to the hinterlands where (gasp!) there is no internet. Will be back, fellow hipsters, in two weeks. Enjoy SxSW and NxSW for me. Nos vemos!

UNofficial SxSW (or, the real reason to go)

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!"
- Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles

I swear, I'm going to make that my annual SxSW quote...

So, you want to go to SxSW but you "forgot" to buy your $500 (with discount) Music badge and your press credentials (and expense account) aren't up to par? I'd say that you officially* don't need one this year. The best stuff is happening outside of the showcases
(I didn't write any of the following, so don't blame me for errors or inconsistencies)...

The UNofficial List of North Texas @ SxSW:

from Stephen Ruiz:
In a Matlock-like turn of events, HOT FLASH! resident DJ Stephen R. will be DJ'ing a Punk-SKA-Dub-Indie set at the Sinister Muse Records and the Lonestar Rollergirl's (did you see their A&E series Rollergirls?) party, "The Biggest Little Party in Austin 2007" on Friday March 16th upstairs at Momo's. Sinister Muse Records' recording artist Graham Isaacson, Treaty of Paris, Dead Town Revival and Omnirox artist The Sterns will perform live. FREE beer and FREE food will be served. Guaranteed to be the best party in Austin - don't miss it! RSVP to info@sinistermuse.com.

from Goodwin:
Goodwin plays at the Dizzy Rooster (306 E 6th St
Austin, TX 78701) on Saturday March 17th at 8pm, courtesy of the Austin Indie Alliance (http://www.austinindiealliance.com)
Admission is FREE. FREE! The AIA has showcases going the entire duration of SXSW at the Dizzy Rooster, and all of them are free.)

from Lindsay Graham/Method Entertainment/BandSiteLive/Deck Sachse....
If you're in Austin next week, please be my guest for an afternoon of music and drinking to kick off this year's SXSW conference. I can think of no better way to begin a 5-day binge of debauchery and excess than to start drinking at noon on a Wednesday, watching excellent bands - all for free.
Arthur Yoria
The Mercers
Airline
Doug Burr
Pleasant Grove
When: Noon, Wednesday, March 14th
Where: B.D. Riley's, on Sixth St., Austin, TX
Flier: http://www.bandsitelive.com /events/sxsw2007/

from Kirtland Records:
Toadies headlining Stubbs during Interactive. Check the Stubbs calendar. Most likely sold out.
Hourly Radio: Gothimist/Austinist party Wed at mohawk time tba - day party.

from Idol Records:

Black Tie Dynasty will also be playing on Sat. March 17 at 8:00 PM at the FOUR ON THE FLOOR PARTY
located at: 1604 San Antonio Austin, TX (between 15th & 16th)
Free food from Fancy Pants Tamales (vegan & vegetarian)

*Officially by me. Not SxSW endorsed. Or by anyone else, for that matter. But I have excellent taste. And you'll tell me when I don't.

Also, here's the scoop on badges: find a friend with one. You may then join them in line to pick up their badge and they can buy a wristband for you for the going rate of around $150-175. That amount changes every year, so check in with Waterloo Records and see how much wristbands are this year. Or, if you have a really really good friend who lives in Austin and likes lines, they can buy a wristband for you at Waterloo when they are released. The trick is that Waterloo makes the announcement only in the Austin Statesman very very close to the day the bands go on sale and your friend needs to get in line at a very unreasonable hour of the morning. Wristbands sell out within a couple hours. If you're relying on a wristband to get into shows, you need to be in Austin on Wednesday. It's highly unlikely that you'll find one for sale, even with a badgeholder, by Friday night. Do you need a wristband or a badge? Only to get into the hot official shows. Otherwise, you can have a fine fun time and never even go near an official venue.

North Texas does SxSW 2007

It's that time again… here is my annual "Who's Going To SxSW From North Texas" list. I've put in the shows I wouldn't miss in bold, but then, that's my taste in music; it may not necessarily be yours. I'm thrilled for all the bands that have showcases, but there were many many wonderful bands from here that were not offered spots. Why not? Who knows? I mean, where is Sorta? I could go on, but I've spent the morning researching this for y'all, since I can't go to SxSW this year (*sob, sob*) and will also miss everything going on in Dallas the week before. Family trip. Attendance required. Can't get out of it. So, this is for you, and especially that contingent coming over from Manchester, UK. Take the list and have a brilliant time. Without me. =(

Don't go to this show

Please don't go to Good Records on Sunday. No one you need to see is playing the instore. Yup, that's right, just move along. Nothing to see there. Please find something else to do. No worries, it'll be a beautiful day for, oh, I dunno... biking, kayaking White Rock Lake, bathing the cat... just don't go to the instore. That's right. No instore. There's a rumor it was cancelled.

But, if you MUST, and I will be very unhappy with you, you can find out what WON'T be happening here.

(I hate crowds.)
