The highlight of Marfa

From a PR email... clearly a must-see art show:

Former Dallas artist and current Marfa resident, Campbell Bosworth will show over 40 pieces from his current work in painting and sculpture on Saturday, May 3 6-8:30 p.m. at the Janette Kennedy Gallery in Southside at Lamar, 1409 S. Lamar. The reception and exhibition are free. The exhibition continues through May 31. BORDERLINE GREATNESS features paintings and sculpture depicting images and objects from Marfa and the Far, West Texas border region. Specifically, Bosworth has chosen to focus on the narco-trafficking aspect of the border. The show features oversized sculptures of carved wooden Glock pistols, a six-foot, silver leafed AK-47 and giant tequila bottles.

Living on the border, I've learned people bring their dreams in some form or another to the USA. Every week our local paper has stories of folks being busted with drugs. But behind those stories are real people or families working just to survive, says Bosworth.

Over 100 brick-sized, carved and painted wood 10,000 dollar bundles occupy a corner of the room. It is 1,000,000 million in cash for the lucky.

Bosworth quips, I woke up every morning and told my wife I was going to the studio to make money.

The highlight of the show may be the 10-foot-high, silver-leafed replica of the Marfa Water Tower. In keeping with the theme of the show, Bosworth has painstakingly engineered it to dispense fine tequila.

I love Lousy Robot. They've recorded all their albums at Pleasantry Lane studios with Salim Nourallah and now they're coming back through Dallas from New Mexico. They're good friends with John Dufilho (he produced their CDs) so the show should be fun. They're straight-up pure pop goodness. Dark lyrics with fun tunes. Great guys. Tidbit of info: their bassist, Dandee Fleming was (until recently when Lousy Robot took up more time) also bassist for The Dirty Novels, who seem to play a lot of Lollipop Shoppe shows. Their Socyermom Records (guys- I want a T-Shirt!!) release, "Smile Like You Are Somewhere Else" follows their equally obliquely named "The Strange and True Story of Your Life."

2007 was an odd year.

I thought I'd been so busy I missed out on great music. Didn't get out to get those fantastic albums that were made this year. Then I realized, nope, that wasn't it. There wasn't all that much made this year.

There was no whittling done on this year's list. A good bit of scrounging, rather.

Gmail, our love affair has been good, but we've stagnated. I'm just not getting what I need out of our relationship, namely: folders. As Paolo Nutini says, "sure I can accept that we're going nowhere," but now it's time for me to move on. There's this other email program, and I know, I know, it's been good between us, but you just can't keep up. Let's part amicably. We'll always be friends. Honest.

A tribute to ... ?

My friend is right. I have no clue who Jellyfish is (was?). They clearly were big during that black period when I was living in a Third World country. It was fun, but it left me with a large gap in my musical knowledge, unless you count Mana. Chris Machart, however, does know who Jellyfish is, and he likes them. So much so that when his band was asked to contribute to Not Lame's Jellyfish tribute, Sensory Lullaby, they picked "All I Want is Everything," a song that ought to be discovered by the disaffected in, say, Highland Park. Take a listen; scroll down to Song #4 at the bottom of the link or hit Millicent Friendly's MySpace. The lovely John Solis played drums and sang on this, too. If you're a Jellyfish fan, check it out.

I think maybe I should catch up a bit on my '90s rock history. Speaking of, wonder if Bill's has a good used copy of Wowee Zowee?
